Misty and Matt Hughes: A Love Story and Career Journey Rooted in UAHT

Feb 14, 2025

Who could have predicted that attending the University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana (UAHT) over 20 years ago would have such a tremendous impact on the lives of two young college students like Misty (Brown) and Matt Hughes? Their story is a testament to the power of education and the lasting connections formed at UAHT.

Matt, a Hope Bobcat, and Misty, a Prescott Curley Wolf, first crossed paths at UAHT in a Sociology class in the Spring of 2001. Despite their high school rivalry, they quickly became friends and started dating by the summer. Misty’s knack for planning their classes together foreshadowed her future role at UAHT. Both enjoyed their remaining courses, including a memorable geography field trip to Petit Jean State Park and Heifer International.

Misty was actively involved on campus, mentoring incoming freshmen and tutoring in the subjects of music and physical science through Trio Student Support Services. After graduating with associate degrees in spring 2002, the couple transferred to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock to pursue their bachelor's degrees. Following their graduation, they married and returned to Hope, Arkansas.

In 2009, Misty began her career at UAHT as a Power Plant Technology Advisor and Scholarship Manager while completing her master's degree. Matt, who had already taught for two years at Spring Hill High School, joined the Texarkana Independent School District (TISD). The couple welcomed their daughter, Brooklyn, and Matt earned his master's degree.

Today, Misty serves as the Dean of Institutional Effectiveness at UAHT, marking her 16th year at the institution. Matt is in his 7th year as an adjunct instructor at UAHT and his 16th year with TISD as a Math and Science teacher.

“It is hard to imagine the direction our lives would have gone had we not attended UAHT. It is the place where we found each other, our shared passion for education, and a place not only to learn but to start a career. UAHT truly was the bridge to our future,” said Misty and Matt.

The Hughes’s story highlights the profound impact that UAHT has had on their personal and professional lives, showcasing the college as a place where lifelong connections and careers are forged.
